  • July sports betting revenue reached $97 million
  • Hold rate hits highest mark of 2026
  • World Cup betting boosts operator results

New Jersey sportsbooks generated nearly $100 million in gross gaming revenue during July, bouncing back from a comparatively difficult June and posting one of their strongest monthly performances of 2026.

According to the latest figures released by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, online and retail sportsbooks combined for $97 million in gross revenue from $816.9 million in wagers during July. The result represented a 29.7% increase from the same month last year and was fueled by an 11.9% hold rate, the highest reported by operators this year.

World Cup betting helps drive strong results

A significant contributor to July’s performance was betting activity tied to the FIFA World Cup. The month included the tournament’s knockout rounds and championship match, creating increased wagering opportunities for bettors and operators alike.

The state’s “other” sports category, which includes soccer wagering, produced particularly strong results. Handle in that segment climbed to $309.2 million, a 60% increase from July 2025. Revenue surged 150% year over year to $37 million as sportsbooks benefited from favorable outcomes and strong betting engagement throughout the tournament.

New Jersey sportsbooks also saw strong returns from parlay wagers. The category generated a hold rate of 19.1% on nearly $50 million in wagers, helping operators achieve their best overall hold percentage since mid-2024.

Revenue rebounds after June slowdown

July marked a notable turnaround from June, when operators retained just 6.2% of a $917 million handle. That lower hold followed a month that included bettor-friendly results involving the New York Knicks’ NBA championship run and the United States men’s national team’s early World Cup success.

The July rebound gave sportsbooks their third-highest monthly revenue total of the year. The performance also restored momentum after June snapped a streak of 39 consecutive months in which New Jersey operators generated at least $60 million in sports betting profits.

Although New Jersey bettors wagered less overall than in June, sportsbooks converted a larger share of wagers into revenue thanks to the improved hold percentage.

Online sportsbooks remain the dominant force

Mobile betting continued to account for nearly all sports betting revenue generated in the state. Of the $97 million reported in July, all but $2.3 million came from online sportsbooks. Retail sportsbooks played only a small role in the state’s overall sports wagering ecosystem.

The strong month also translated into additional tax revenue for New Jersey. The state collected approximately $20 million from sports wagering activity during July, increasing year-to-date sports betting tax collections to $127.3 million.

Industry leaders FanDuel and DraftKings both continued to post year-over-year revenue growth exceeding 20%, underscoring the ongoing strength of New Jersey’s mature sports betting market.

Sports betting remains key part of broader gaming market

July’s sportsbook performance contributed to a larger gaming industry upswing across New Jersey. Statewide gaming revenue, including casino gaming, internet gaming, and sports wagering, climbed to $678.1 million for the month, an increase of 11.9% from July 2025.

While online casino gaming continues to generate a larger share of total gaming revenue, sports betting remains an important contributor. July demonstrated how major international sporting events can quickly influence monthly results and help sportsbooks recover from slower periods.

With football season approaching and betting activity traditionally increasing during the fall, New Jersey operators will look to build on July’s momentum and continue closing the gap on last year’s year-to-date sports betting revenue totals.
