  • New York launches decade-long study on gambling behavior trends
  • Research may improve visibility of responsible gaming tools
  • Lawmakers push stronger protections as betting market expands

New York is putting together a 10-year research effort to better understand gambling behavior in what is the nation’s largest online sports betting market. The goal is to raise awareness and improve support services for problem gambling.

Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, the study will examine how residents engage with gambling and identify gaps in existing resources. It will be managed by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports, with respondents invited to participate through surveys, interviews, and focus groups.

What the New York gambling study will examine

The planned research will take a broad look at gambling behavior across the state, aiming to identify patterns linked to harm, measure how widespread problem gambling, and evaluate how well communities understand the risks involved.

It will also be used to guide the development of prevention strategies, and treatment while shaping future improvements to gambling services statewide.

Gov. Hochul said the initiative reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to addressing problem gambling, adding that the findings will provide meaningful insight into user behavior This would allow them to direct more data-driven investments to expand access to care and strengthen protections against problem gambling.

New York emerges as a leader in responsible gaming efforts

In addition to this study, New York has positioned itself as a leader in responsible gaming policy, with lawmakers pursuing measures aimed at increasing player protections as the betting market expands.

In recent legislative sessions, policymakers including Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr. and Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner have backed a series of proposals focused on transparency and consumer safeguards. The State Assembly recently approved multiple initiatives. This includes requirements for sportsbooks to provide detailed account statements and updates to streamline self-exclusion policies, making them easier to access.

The goal with these efforts is to balance the economic benefits of legalized sports betting with stronger protections for all participants. It emphasizes the need for better data and policy tools as gambling participation continues to grow.

Why the study could improve visibility of responsible gaming tools

One of the key benefits of New York’s long-term study is its potential to highlight gaps in how responsible gaming tools are presented. While safeguards such as self-exclusion and setting spending limits already exist, they are not always prominently displayed. This makes it more difficult for users to access them.

By analyzing player behavior, the research could reveal whether users know these tools are available and how often they are utilized. This can result in responsible gaming tools being more directly integrated into the sports betting experience.
