  • World Cup betting boosted operator results

New York mobile sportsbooks posted one of their strongest weeks of 2026 as operators regained the upper hand against bettors during the latter stages of the FIFA World Cup. According to figures reported by the New York Gaming Commission, the state’s eight mobile sportsbooks generated approximately $66 million in gross gaming revenue during the week ending July 12.

The result was driven by a 14.2% hold rate, meaning sportsbooks kept just over 14 cents of every dollar wagered. The figure marked New York’s highest weekly hold since January and reflected a notable shift after a stretch of favorable outcomes for bettors earlier in the summer. During June, sportsbooks experienced several challenging weeks as major sporting events and popular teams produced results that benefited customers rather than operators.

Revenue rebounds after bettor-friendly stretch

The strong performance came during a period that included the United States men’s national team’s World Cup exit against Belgium in the Round of 32. While soccer betting generated significant interest throughout the tournament, sportsbooks were ultimately able to convert much of that wagering activity into revenue.

The $66 million total represented the second time in three weeks that New York operators topped $60 million in weekly revenue. That performance helped offset a much lighter $36.5 million revenue week immediately beforehand. It also followed a period in June when sportsbooks collectively suffered substantial losses after favorable outcomes for bettors connected to the NBA Finals and early World Cup matches.

Recent results suggest operators benefited from increased betting activity tied to the global soccer tournament. Over the past four weeks, sportsbooks averaged $53.8 million in revenue, representing a significant increase compared to the same period a year earlier.

Betting volume remains elevated

Despite the strong revenue figures, total wagering volume declined compared to some of the busiest weeks of the World Cup. New Yorkers wagered $464.5 million during the reporting period, making it the first week since early June in which handle fell below $500 million.

Even so, year-over-year growth remained impressive. Handle increased 41.3% from the comparable week in 2025, highlighting the continued expansion of New York’s sports betting market. Industry observers may view the dip below $500 million as a seasonal slowdown rather than a long-term trend, particularly with football season still several weeks away.

Sportsbooks often experience softer wagering volume during midsummer before NFL and college football betting returns. As a result, operators may continue relying on favorable hold percentages to maintain strong revenue totals until seasonal betting activity increases.

DraftKings and FanDuel lead the market

DraftKings recorded the largest betting handle of the week, accepting $165.7 million in wagers. Although that amount represented a week-over-week decline, the operator still generated $23.5 million in gross revenue. The company matched the statewide average hold rate and produced its most profitable week since May.

FanDuel generated even more revenue despite handling slightly fewer wagers. The sportsbook earned $25 million from $162.5 million in bets, fueled by a 15.4% hold rate. That figure ranked among its strongest weekly performances of the year.

Several other operators also posted double-digit hold percentages. Fanatics recorded a 14.5% hold, while BetMGM, Caesars, and theScore Bet all surpassed 11%. Only BetRivers and Bally Bet finished the week below a 10% hold rate.

The results illustrate how quickly sportsbook profitability can shift. Even when wagering volume remains high, operator revenue is often determined by the outcomes of a relatively small number of heavily bet events, making hold percentage a closely watched metric throughout the sports betting industry.
