Key Points
  • Ohio handle topped $624 million in July
  • Revenue increased nearly 12% year over year
  • World Cup betting boosted market activity

Ohio’s sports betting market recorded another strong month in July, with wagering volume and operator revenue both increasing compared to the same period last year. Data released by the Ohio Casino Control Commission showed sportsbooks accepted $624.6 million in bets during the month, marking a 17.3% increase from the $532.3 million wagered in July 2025.

The latest figures extended a significant streak for the state’s regulated market. July represented the 12th consecutive month that Ohio sportsbooks handled more than $600 million in wagers, highlighting the market’s ability to maintain consistent activity even outside of the NFL season.

World Cup betting helped drive July performance

A major contributor to Ohio’s July results was the FIFA World Cup, which generated elevated wagering activity throughout June and July. While Major League Baseball provided a steady betting calendar, the global soccer tournament delivered the type of high-profile events that traditionally attract both casual and experienced bettors.

The World Cup’s impact was visible in multiple performance metrics. Ohio sportsbooks generated nearly 12% more revenue than they did in July of last year despite a slightly lower hold percentage. Operators finished the month with a 10.8% hold, down from 11.3% a year earlier, yet the growth in betting volume more than compensated for that decline.

The increase in activity also translated into government revenue. Ohio collected approximately $13.5 million in sports betting tax revenue during July, pushing the state’s year-to-date total above $114 million.

Two-month World Cup period produced over $1.28 billion

When June and July are combined, the scale of World Cup wagering becomes even more apparent. The two months that included the tournament generated approximately $1.28 billion in total wagers across Ohio sportsbooks.

That total exceeded the $1.18 billion recorded during the same two-month period a year earlier. Although taxable revenue across June and July was slightly lower on a year-over-year basis, betting volume increased substantially, indicating sustained consumer engagement throughout the tournament.

Promotional spending also rose during the period. Sportsbooks reported $16.8 million in promotional wagering during July, bringing the World Cup period total to $38.3 million. That represented a more than 22% increase from the comparable period in 2025.

Online sportsbooks continued to dominate

Online sportsbooks remained the primary driver of Ohio’s market, accounting for $617.1 million of the state’s total handle. Retail sportsbooks represented only a small fraction of overall wagering activity.

DraftKings and FanDuel continued their competition for market leadership. DraftKings generated the highest handle at $202.4 million, while FanDuel produced the most revenue after posting a stronger hold percentage on nearly $189.4 million in wagers.

Behind the two market leaders, bet365 maintained a clear hold on third place by generating nearly $75 million in handle. BetMGM, Fanatics, Caesars, and Hard Rock Bet also contributed meaningful revenue totals during the month.

July’s results reinforce Ohio’s position as one of the country’s most active sports betting jurisdictions. With the market continuing to produce more than $600 million in monthly wagers and major sporting events regularly driving engagement, Ohio remains on a trajectory of sustained growth heading into the busiest portion of the sports calendar.
