  • Candidates divided on gambling expansion approaches
  • New bill signals growing legalization momentum
  • Regulated market could reduce offshore betting use

Republican candidates in South Carolina’s 2026 race for governor expressed clear differences on the issue of gambling in a recent debate. This could affect momentum towards creating a legal, regulated online betting environment in South Carolina.

Mixed opinions towards gambling among candidates

Gambling policy has become an increasingly prominent issue in South Carolina, as recent years have seen renewed efforts to expand legalization. Progress, however, has been limited in part due to longstanding opposition from Governor Henry McMaster, whose position has historically acted as a barrier to change.

During the debate, the candidates presented a range of perspectives on casinos, online betting, and other forms of gambling, underscoring a lack of consensus within the field.

Ralph Norman and Alan Wilson expressed firm resistance to casino development, pointing to concerns about crime and broader social consequences. Norman also emphasized his refusal to accept campaign contributions tied to the gambling industry. Wilson, while opposing casinos, signaled some openness to discussing online betting, noting the challenges of limiting access in a digital environment.

Josh Kimbrell took a more mixed position, opposing widespread mobile betting but suggesting that a single, strategically placed casino could provide economic benefits to underserved areas. Meanwhile, Nancy Mace avoided committing to a specific stance, instead indicating she would evaluate potential legislation and consider public input before making a decision.

Active legislation adds momentum to potential legalization push

Momentum for legalized sports betting in South Carolina is already building, with lawmakers actively considering new legislation that could establish a regulated market. Senate Bill 444, a proposal to authorize statewide online sports wagering, has recently been introduced, signaling a more serious push than in previous years.

While the proposal still faces legislative hurdles, its progression reflects growing interest among policymakers in capturing revenue currently lost to other states and offshore platforms. Combined with the potential departure of Gov. McMaster, a consistent opponent of gambling expansion, the bill represents a meaningful step forward and could position South Carolina closer to legalization than in previous years.

While the new candidates for South Carolina governor have mixed views on sports betting, their comments in this recent debate suggest that they’re more open to the issue than Gov. McMaster.

Regulated market can deter offshore betting activity

The ongoing debate around legalization also highlights concerns about unregulated gambling, particularly since there’s no regulated option for South Carolina bettors at this time. This makes it more likely to turn to these offshore sites, which operate outside U.S. oversight and offer limited consumer protections.

Establishing a regulated iGaming and sports betting market could help shift activity away from offshore operators by providing a safer, transparent alternative. Legal platforms would be subject to state regulations, including age verification and responsible gaming measures.

Given what’s been discussed in the recent debates among Republican candidates for the next South Carolina governor, there’s hope for a regulated market in the foreseeable future.
