Two Major League Baseball pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz of the Cleveland Guardians, have been federally charged in connection with an alleged sports-betting scheme.
According to court filings unsealed this past weekend, the players are accused of accepting bribes to manipulate in-game outcomes, allowing bettors to profit from rigged prop wagers. The charges, which include wire fraud and money-laundering conspiracies, mark one of the most serious gambling-related scandals to emerge in professional baseball in decades.
Clase is accused of initiating the scheme around May 2023, with Ortiz allegedly joining in June 2025. Federal prosecutors claim the two pitchers conspired with gamblers to manipulate specific in-game events for betting advantages.
Court documents describe one instance in which Clase allegedly and knowingly threw pitches “in the dirt, well outside the strike zone,” ensuring predetermined outcomes that allowed bettors to profit on micro-wagers related to specific pitches. For example, by purposely throwing a pitch way out of the strike zone, Clase allowed bettors to profit on the result of his next pitch being a ball.
Ortiz is further accused of accepting a $5,000 bribe to throw a specific pitch during a June 15, 2025 game, while Clase allegedly received the same amount for arranging the act.
Authorities report that Ortiz was arrested in Boston, whereas Clase is not currently in U.S. custody. Both players have been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as Major League Baseball conducts its internal investigation.
If convicted on all charges, the pitchers could face prison sentences of up to 65 years. The U.S. Attorney described the case as a “betrayal of trust,” emphasizing that the accused players compromised the integrity of the sport, their team, and the confidence of fans nationwide.
The Clase and Ortiz case highlights the growing concerns surrounding micro-betting, a form of wagering in which users can bet on highly specific outcomes, such as the result of a single pitch, the speed of a fastball, or whether the next batter will take a strike. Because these events have minimal impact on the final score, they are more difficult to detect and easier for players to manipulate without immediately drawing suspicion.
This kind of betting creates new vulnerabilities for professional sports, especially when athletes have direct influence over individual in-game moments. Even small actions, like intentionally missing the strike zone, can yield significant profits for bettors and illicit actors involved in coordinated schemes.
The ease with which micro-betting can compromise the integrity of competition has sparked broader discussions among league officials, regulators, and lawmakers about whether such wagers should be limited or banned altogether. This could result in stricter monitoring of player behavior and enhanced transparency in betting data, or even the outright prohibition of micro-bets, as that may be the only effective safeguard to protect the credibility of the game.
