Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images Manny Machado drove in three runs in support of Nick Pivetta, who quieted the Philadelphia Phillies over six innings to guide the San Diego Padres to a 6-4 road victory in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Pivetta (9-2) allowed one run and seven hits against his former team as San Diego evened the mid-week series at one game apiece. The Padres will try to capture the rubber game Wednesday evening, when right-hander Dylan Cease takes the mound opposite Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sanchez.
Kyle Schwarber hit his 26th homer for Philadelphia, which had won three of its previous four games. Schwarber also represented the winning run in the ninth, but Padres closer Robert Suarez struck out the Phillies' slugger to end it.
Philadelphia starter Mick Abel (2-2) allowed five runs, two hits and five walks in 1 2/3 innings. He walked four batters in the second inning, including consecutive bases-loaded walks to Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill to make it 2-0.
Machado then deposited a hit into the left-field corner, scoring three runs with his 21st double of the season.
San Diego scored another run on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth, when Max Lazar issued a free pass to Luis Arraez to plate Elias Diaz, who had walked to open the frame.
Taijuan Walker stabilized things for the Phillies, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings to give the hosts a chance to mount a comeback.
Schwarber got Philadelphia on the board in the sixth with a leadoff homer against Pivetta, who recovered to retire the next three hitters. Pivetta finished with six strikeouts and no walks in lowering his ERA to 3.25.
The Phillies tacked on two more runs against Bryan Hoeing in the seventh. Edmundo Sosa knocked in a run with a triple and then came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.
Adrian Morejon settled things down with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief before Suarez escaped a tenuous situation in the ninth for his 24th save.
Suarez allowed an RBI single to Brandon Marsh with two outs. He then gave up a single to Trea Turner that advanced Marsh safely to third on a play that was reversed following replay review. Turner stole second, but Suarez got Schwarber on a high fastball to seal the victory.
