MLB roundup: Brewers clinch playoff berth, then down Cards in 10

Caleb Durbin ripped a game-tying RBI double in the 10th inning, then scored the winner on Andruw Monasterio's single as the host Milwaukee Brewers topped the St. Louis Cardinals 9-8 on Saturday.
The Brewers celebrated their 11th walk-off victory of the season hours after they officially clinched their seventh postseason berth in eight years with the New York Mets' 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers.
After Jordan Walker scored on a double-play groundout in the top of the 10th inning, Durbin forged an 8-8 tie with a double into the left-center field gap. Monasterio then capped a 10-pitch at-bat against Kyle Leahy (4-2) with a single to center. Abner Uribe (3-2) got the win after allowing the 10th-inning run on no hits and one walk.
Milwaukee's William Contreras had an RBI infield single to cap a three-run outburst in the ninth. He had three RBIs and Sal Frelick drove in two runs for the Brewers, who trailed by five entering the bottom of the sixth. St. Louis' Ivan Herrera homered to highlight a three-hit performance and Brendan Donovan also went deep. Thomas Saggese had an RBI single among his three hits for the Cardinals, who have lost five in a row.
Mariners 5, Angels 3
Bryan Woo posted his American League-leading 21st quality start of the season and struck out a career-high 13 batters as surging Seattle defeated visiting Los Angeles.
J.P. Crawford homered as the Mariners won their eighth in a row to remain tied with Houston atop the AL West and two games ahead of Texas for the league's third and final wild-card berth. Jo Adell and Taylor Ward went deep for the Angels, who lost their third in a row.
Woo (14-7) pitched six innings and gave up two runs on three hits with one walk. The right-hander retired the final 13 batters he faced.
Rays 5, Cubs 4
Nick Fortes hit a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth inning and Tampa Bay held on to beat host Chicago.
Bryan Baker (4-4) picked up the win in relief, and Pete Fairbanks collected his 26th save with a scoreless ninth despite the tying run getting to third with no outs. Junior Caminero had two hits for the Rays, including his 43rd homer. Fortes, Chandler Simpson and Yandy Diaz also had two hits. Starter Drew Rasmussen went five innings, giving up four hits and three runs, with five strikeouts.
Cubs rookie Moises Ballesteros hit his first major league home run in the second inning. Chicago celebrated Anthony Rizzo with a retirement ceremony before the game, and the former Cubs first baseman was visiting with fans in the left field bleachers when Ballesteros' home run came to him, bouncing off his hand to the fan behind him. Michael Busch also homered, his 27th. Brad Keller (4-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up Fortes' home run.
Blue Jays 5, Orioles 4
Alejandro Kirk hit a sacrifice fly to cap a three-run ninth to help Toronto defeat visiting Baltimore.
Kirk, who had an RBI single as a pinch hitter in the eighth, hit the decisive fly to center against Yennier Cano (3-7). Addison Barger hit a solo home run for the Blue Jays (86-62). Toronto starter Max Scherzer was tagged for two runs in the first inning, but followed that up with four scoreless innings of work.
Coby Mayo homered and Gunnar Henderson and Samuel Basallo had RBI doubles to help the Orioles, who also got six one-run innings of work from starter Tomoyoki Sugano.
Yankees 5, Red Sox 3
Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs to help lift visiting New York to a win over Boston.
The Yankees scored twice in the first inning and never relinquished a 4-0 lead it had built by the fifth inning. Cody Bellinger went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a two-out double high off the Green Monster to drive home an important insurance run against Red Sox reliever Aroldis Chapman, who allowed a run for the second straight outing. Aaron Judge (2-for-3, two runs) singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch to set up the RBI opportunity. Max Fried (17-5) allowed just two runs despite allowing nine hits across 5 1/3 innings.
Alex Bregman and Duran both homered for Boston, while Nate Eaton, Nick Sogard and Connor Wong each had two hits.
Phillies 8, Royals 6
Brandon Marsh drove in three runs and Kyle Schwarber belted his 51st homer to highlight Philadelphia's win over visiting Kansas City.
With their ninth win in 10 games, the Phillies lowered their magic number to one to clinch the National League East. They are two games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the top overall seed in the NL postseason.
Salvador Perez hit two home runs for the Royals, giving him 300 for his career, and drove in three runs, pushing his career total to 1,000. Kansas City has lost six of its last seven games and will try to avoid a three-game sweep on Sunday.
Rangers 3, Mets 2
Wyatt Langford hit a tiebreaking RBI single off Edwin Diaz with two outs in the ninth inning as surging Texas rallied past host New York, whose losing streak reached a season-worst eight games.
The Rangers tied a season high by winning six straight for the fourth time and improved to 7-48 when trailing through seven. Phil Maton (4-5) got the final out of the eighth after Chris Martin suffered an apparent injury. Shawn Armstrong later allowed a single to pinch hitter Ronny Mauricio but fanned Brandon Nimmo to finish his ninth save and strand two.
Before Texas rallied, Juan Soto became the fifth player in Mets history to hit at least 40 homers in a season. Soto joined Pete Alonso (2019, 2022, 2023), Carlos Beltran (2006), Todd Hundley (1996) and Hall of Famer Mike Piazza (1999) as the fifth player in team history with a 40-homer season.
Diamondbacks 5, Twins 2 (10 innings)
Alek Thomas hit a two-run homer, Blaze Alexander doubled and drove in a pair and Arizona outlasted Minnesota in Minneapolis after the game was tied at 2 through nine innings.
Gabriel Moreno also drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who evened the series at one victory apiece with the rubber match set for Sunday. Geraldo Perdomo finished 2-for-4. Right-hander John Curtiss (3-1) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory. He allowed one hit, walked none and struck out two.
Kody Clemens went 2-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the Twins. Right-hander Cole Sands (4-5) gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits in one inning. He took the loss after picking up the victory in the series opener.
Guardians 3, White Sox 1
Parker Messick won his third straight decision to begin his career and CJ Kayfus and Jhonkensy Noel each homered as Cleveland beat visiting Chicago.
The victory allowed the Guardians to pull within 3 1/2 games of the third and final American League wild-card spot, currently shared by the West Division co-leading Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners.
Messick (3-0) struck out four over six innings, giving up one run on seven hits with a walk. He is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in two home starts. Kayfus belted a two-run homer in his second straight game, taking Davis Martin (6-10) deep in the second.
Padres 11, Rockies 3
Manny Machado homered for the second straight game, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Bryce Johnson also went deep, and San Diego topped visiting Colorado.
Machado, Tatis, Elias Diaz and Luis Arraez finished with two hits each for the Padres. Arraez left the game after he was hit with a warmup throw as he jogged onto the field to field his position at the start of the ninth inning.
Dylan Cease (8-11) gave up a run on five hits and one walk and struck out six in six innings for San Diego. Tyler Freeman doubled twice and singled and Jordan Beck had two hits for Colorado, which has lost 18 of its last 22 games. The Rockies need just one win in their last 13 games to avoid tying the 2024 Chicago White Sox for the most losses in the modern era.
Dodgers 13, Giants 7
Shohei Ohtani launched his 49th home run, Teoscar Hernandez and Ben Rortvedt contributed two-run doubles in a six-run fifth inning and a classic pitching matchup of Clayton Kershaw against Logan Webb turned into a slugfest as visiting Los Angeles pounded San Francisco.
Kershaw was touched for four runs in three innings and Webb for six runs in four-plus frames in a game that saw the Dodgers retain their 2 1/2-game lead over the San Diego Padres atop the National League West, while the Giants missed out on an opportunity to move past the New York Mets in the NL wild-card race.
After San Francisco countered a Los Angeles tally in the top of the inning with four runs in the last of the first, a majority of the night's fireworks were shot off by the visitors, who totaled 17 hits. Ohtani's homer to center field leading off the third was the loudest blow of the evening, a 454-foot bomb that not only was the longest by a Dodger this season but also the longest at Oracle Park in 2025.
Pirates 5, Nationals 1
Andrew McCutchen and Nick Yorke each hit two-out, two-run singles with two outs in the eighth inning to lift visiting Pittsburgh to a win against Washington, snapping a seven-game losing streak.
Jared Triolo added a solo homer in the ninth. Pirates pitcher Bubba Chandler, in his second MLB start, was perfect five innings before allowing a single to Dylan Crews leading off the sixth. Chandler gave up a run on two hits.
Nationals starter Andrew Alvarez allowed three hits and a walk while striking out five. Cole Henry (1-2) took the loss.
Marlins 6, Tigers 4 (11 innings)
Troy Johnston hit a walk-off two-run home run in the 11th inning -- his second homer of the game -- to give host Miami a come-from-behind win over Detroit.
The Marlins won their fourth straight and assured themselves of winning the three-game weekend series. Josh Simpson (4-2) got the win after stepping in to get the last two outs in the top of the 11th. Miami starter Hanson Junk gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk in six innings, with four strikeouts.
The AL Central-leading Tigers lost their third straight to keep their magic number at eight. Detroit took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th on Wenceel Perez's RBI double but could not score again despite having the bases loaded with nobody out. Tigers starter Charlie Morton went four innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
Athletics 11, Reds 5
Jacob Wilson broke a seventh-inning tie with a double, Carlos Cortes hit his third home run in two days and the Athletics dealt Cincinnati's postseason hopes another blow with win in West Sacramento, Calif.
Nick Kurtz chipped in with a late grand slam and Brent Rooker also homered for the A's, who got four innings of shutout ball from four relievers after starter Luis Severino left a 5-5 game after the fifth.
Will Benson and Tyler Stephenson had home runs for the Reds, who gained no ground in the National League wild-card race despite losses by the two teams immediately ahead of them -- the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. Nick Martinez (10-13) took the loss after allowing a leadoff double in the seventh to Shea Langeliers, who scored on Wilson's double off Graham Ashcraft later in the inning. Brady Basso (1-0), who threw a scoreless seventh, was credited with the win.
Astros 6, Braves 2
Hunter Brown threw 6 2/3 quality innings, Jeremy Pena and Christian Walker each drove in two runs, and Houston downed host Atlanta to win consecutive games for the first time since a three-game winning streak from Aug. 27-29.
Brown (12-7) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one. Yainer Diaz went 3-for-4 for the Astros, who needed to win to stay tied with Seattle, which also won on Saturday, atop the American League West. Houston and Seattle also hold a two-game lead over the third-place Texas Rangers, who won their sixth straight earlier Saturday.
Braves starter Bryce Elder (7-10) allowed six runs on 10 hits across 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking three. Matt Olson had two hits, including a solo homer, for Atlanta, which lost its fourth straight and is 4-11 over its last 15.
