One of the more niche trading card genres we’ve come across in recent times are airline trading cards - enthusiasts and plane spotters alike can get cards from popular US airlines like Delta, United and Alaska Airlines.
We wanted to expand our knowledge on this subject so we've done a heap of research and created the below guide. If you read on, we look at where you can potentially get these cards, what makes valuable pulls stand out, and how you can get started with your airline trading card collection.
Let’s first take a look at what these cards are and why they remain popular. The original creator of airline trading cards was Delta Airlines – they produced them as a type of marketing material for their internal American airline services, with pilots and other staff handing them out to passengers and in terminals. The first set was produced in 2003, and since then they have created many more, including a special two-card anniversary set in 2025.
After Delta, multiple other American carriers took up the trend and started producing their own cards, and as of writing, the following airlines are known to have their own cards:
Usually, the cards depict a specific airplane model, and the reverse of the card might feature stats about the plane. However, some airlines have also created special sets based on the common routes their planes fly and the destinations they frequent. For instance, one of the best-known sets like this is from Frontier Airlines – they created an animal-themed set featuring Polar Bears, Foxes, and Birds of Prey.
In terms of collecting, the best card break sites are becoming an increasingly useful option thanks to their secondary marketplaces. These P2P platforms allow collectors to buy and trade cards with one another, and this is currently the most likely place to find airline trading cards. While airline trading cards are not yet featured in card break packs, we expect them to become available in future breaks as the hobby continues to grow in popularity.

We assess the quality, accessibility, and searchability of the marketplace, things like trading fees and authenticity guarantees, and of course, the availability of different airline trading cards for sale. On top of that, there are other general aspects we check such as accepted payment methods, customer support availability, and shipping policies.

As we mentioned, the marketplace is the main feature currently where you can get airline trading cards. BUT, these sites also have another main feature – the card break packs themselves. We still want to explain how these work as we do believe airline packs will be a thing in the near future.
For instance, Yu-Gi-Oh! card rips are individual packs or mystery boxes that you can buy for a set amount. Within each pack, there is a potential pool of cards that you can pull. Additionally, the cards will often be grouped into rarity tiers, with each tier or individual card having a specific percentage chance of being pulled. When you rip one of these packs, you get a single card that could be below your pack cost, or far above it if you get lucky and manage to pull one of the “grail” cards (a grail card is seen as one of the most desirable and valuable cards for that genre, such as a 1st Edition Charizard).
Usually, you can then either sell your card back to the site for their buyback offer value, keep it in your digital vault, or if you want to keep it, have it delivered to your address.
Similar to horror trading cards, airline trading cards are not considered to be mainstream like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, and sports cards. Combine that with the scarcity and the lack of exposure, and it can be incredibly difficult to get hold of them for fair prices.
This is where card break sites can work wonders. In the future, we envision airline card breaks being a thing, but even right now, you should be able to scour their secondary marketplaces and fine airline trading cards. This essentially allows you to cut out all of the extra effort, price gouging, and competition and get straight to the airline cards you want to collect.
Right now, you cannot get anything like Delta airline trading cards at break sites – there needs to be an explosion in popularity and availability for that to happen. Still, there’s no harm in being prepared, so using our knowledge of other trading card genres and how they work at break sites, we’ve listed some simple considerations below:
Airline trading cards are much rarer than sports or Pokemon trading cards. Sports trading cards have been around for over a century, and Pokemon cards have been printed since the 1990s. In contrast, airline trading cards were first created by Delta Airlines in 2003, with only 6-8 carriers producing their own sets since then. Currently, airline trading cards are not as accessible or available as the other more popular genres.
Delta Airlines is the original pioneer of airline trading cards, making them typically the most valuable in mint condition. Other carriers offer cool artwork and card designs as well, so it’s advisable to do your research on the different sets these airlines have before joining any recommended card break sites.
The best option for card break sites is their secondary marketplaces. In addition to card breaks, many sites feature P2P marketplaces where you can trade cards with other collectors. Some cards in these marketplaces will be from packs that others have ripped, but there’s often the option to sell cards you already own, allowing you to find items like American Airlines trading cards and others.
