Sporttrade, the company behind the premier sports market technology platform announced that the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has officially granted them registration as both a Designated Contract Market (DCM) and a Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO).
The designation allows the company based just outside of Philadelphia to support intermediated activity through Futures Commission Merchants.
Sporttrade CEO Alexander Kane said receiving DCM and DCO registrations from the CFTC “is a true full circle moment for our company.”
“We founded Sporttrade on the principle that sports markets deserve the same high-performance structure, tight pricing, and regulatory integrity as traditional financial markets,” Kane said. “By operating as both the exchange and the clearing venue, we are empowering broker partners with superior market quality while giving sophisticated traders the liquidity, transparency, and service they demand.”
He noted that in addition to the exchange business, the company has begun clearing discussions with several exchanges who have understood “Sporttrade to be a market leader on exchange and clearing technology for the past five years.”
The company will be operating under CFTC oversight. In preparation for launch, Sporttrade is onboarding brokers with national distribution that will route order flow from their customers to the exchange pending regulatory approval. They’re aiming to deliver superior market structure, tight spreads, and real-time execution across sports event contracts.
The focus is on improving the quality of execution for brokers and their customers.
The premier sports market technology platform is built from the ground up. Once it launches, Sporttrade will bring the technology and market structure of traditional financial exchanges to sports markets.
Additionally, the company will provide its partners and participants with an execution environment engineered for scale and reliability.
If Sporttrade sounds familiar, it’s likely because the company was previously live in five states, including New Jersey and Virginia, as a sports betting exchange. Under the previous business model, the operator followed state regulations. In the Garden State, for example, they were required to partner with a land-based casino operator.
When the product launched in September 2022, the company differentiated itself from market leaders DraftKings and FanDuel by promoting itself as “the first and only dynamic sports trading marketplace in the United States.”
However, the business plan changed as Sporttrade exited the sports betting space with a move to the prediction market space being the rumored next step.
This week’s company announcement did not include a specific timeline regarding when the new Sporttrade platform will be available. As far as next steps go, Sporttrade DCM will roll out its exchange and clearing capabilities in phases. The plan is to start with select flow and liquidity providers.
The company is working with a pipeline of additional brokers and institutional partners to quickly expand its market presence.
