The 2026 PGA Tour FedExCup Playoffs will officially begin on Thursday, August 13th, with a field of 70 hopefuls. Thanks to his outstanding regular season performance, the world’s No. 1 golfer, Scottie Scheffler, has already secured the top spot (along with an $18 million cash prize) heading into the playoffs.
The recent first-place finish by rookie Jackson Koivun at the 3M Open, coupled with Michael Thorbjornsen’s comeback win this Sunday in Detroit, could have lasting implications for who makes the initial top 70 cut after this weekend’s action concludes. Thorbjornsen is comfortably ranked No. 38 in the official standings, but Jackson Koivun (currently ranked No. 70) will need a solid performance at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro to advance.
Over $2.6 million has already been traded on Polymarket as golf fans review the exact rules that will determine the next FedExCup champion on August 30th. Although Scottie Scheffler has had a very consistent year that has made him the mathematically-guaranteed regular season frontrunner, there’s no way we can justify his ultra-elevated 25¢ contract price to win the FedExCup.
That’s because this year’s Tour Championship won’t include “starting strokes.” All of the top 30 players who remain at the beginning of the Tour Championship on August 27th will start at even par. There will be no stroke advantages awarded to players regardless of their overall FedExCup ranking leading into that event.
Scheffler didn’t participate in the Rocket Classic this past weekend, but finished second to Jackson Koivun in his most recent outing, the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. The native Texan won’t be present at the Wyndham Championship this weekend, either. His next scheduled appearance is at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, which starts on August 13th and kicks off the FedExCup Playoffs.
Much of the media buzz is still focused on Jackson Koivun, who has a chance to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs this weekend. As long as he can remain at No. 70 or improve his standing, he will be in contention, but he must secure his spot this weekend in North Carolina.
That shouldn’t be much of an ask for the Auburn University standout who turned pro roughly one month ago. His composure was on full display at the 3M Open, where he held off a surging Scottie Scheffler to win his first-ever PGA Tour event.
For some reason, Koivun isn’t listed on the current Polymarket prediction market app as a contender for the FedExCup, but that will immediately change if he impresses this weekend and avoids being eliminated from contention.
Cameron Young, Sam Burns, and Tommy Fleetwood have all surged in recent days as Polymarket traders adjust their strategy ahead of the FedExCup Playoffs. Cameron Young is listed at 6.8¢ per contract, Sam Burns at 7.0¢, and Tommy Fleetwood at 8.8 cents.
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are still the frontrunners to hoist the FedExCup trophy on August 30th, but there’s simply no way that Scheffler is 3-to-1 to win in a 30-field Tour Championship event that doesn’t have any added strokes. The FedExCup Playoffs finale will be a pure shootout, meaning that each of the 30 remaining participants will start the Tour Championship at even par.
