With roughly 45 days remaining until the 2026 US midterm elections, Kalshi forecasters have placed the Democratic Party in the pole position to win control of the US Senate on November 3rd. Political prediction markets had Republicans pegged as the clear favorites to retain control of the upper chamber coming into this month, but the market has now broken in favor of the current minority party.
Traders who want to pick up contracts on the Democrats to overcome their current Senate deficit can buy “yes” contracts for 60¢ on Kalshi, where the market has eclipsed $14 million. By contrast, the Republicans’ chances have dropped all the way down to 41%, according to prediction market activity.
New polling released by the New York Times and Siena University shows that the Democratic Party is gaining momentum nationwide as downward economic trends and rising energy prices remain front-and-center in voters’ minds ahead of November. When considering that overall trends over the past few decades have traditionally favored the minority party during midterms, it’s easy to see why political forecasters are shifting the percentages.
Prices at the pump, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and growing negative sentiment around the current administration appear to be giving Democrats the edge on the nation’s largest CFTC-regulated prediction platform.
Since May, the Republicans had enjoyed a slight advantage in prediction market forecasts on apps like Kalshi. The reasoning behind those projections was centered around two key Senate races in Michigan and Texas.
Could the Democrats really hold on to a key Senate seat in Michigan, where socialist Abdul El-Sayed is facing off against established politician Mike Rogers? And could James Talarico actually pick up the Texas Senate seat that John Cornyn lost in a primary election against Ken Paxton?
Prediction market traders on Kalshi are answering “yes” to both of the above questions. El-Sayed contracts to win the Michigan Senate seat are trading at 67¢ while James Talarico contracts are available for 60¢ to pull off what many would have considered to be a “major upset” just a few months ago.
Political forecasters who believe the US Senate control market will be a “nail-biter” will want to take a very close look at the settlement terms published by Kalshi.
“This market may be determined early based on a consensus of media calls projecting control of the U.S. Senate. See full rules for details. Otherwise, victory will be determined by the party identification of the President pro tempore of the Senate on February 1, 2027.”
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has denied rumors that he may switch parties if the final Senate-seat tally is 51-49 as a result of the midterm elections. However, his video appearance at the recent Republican National Midterm Convention has turned a lot of heads in the political world.
Due to the precise settlement terms of this Kalshi market, traders will want to consider the potential of a 50-50 Senate tie that could leave the Republican Party in control of the upper chamber. Individuals who are interested in placing trades on US political outcomes can join Kalshi now and begin forecasting elections in just a few short minutes.
