Arguably, the most decisive fixture in the English Premier League takes place this weekend, when Manchester City meets Arsenal. The Gunners sit six points clear at the top of the table, but City have a game in hand, and a win here would put them in a very good position ahead of those last few games. With a little help from Kalshi, we’ve been checking out how the market sees this one panning out.
Throughout this campaign, Arsenal have been sitting atop the leaderboard by a considerable margin. Manchester City started slower than usual, but they have found their usual impressive form and have mounted a serious challenge in the closing stages.
Now, ahead of this weekend’s fixture between the two, just six points separate them. A win for Arsenal would push the distance to nine points; however, it is important to bear in mind that Manchester City still has a game in hand. This means that a win for City would bring the deficit to just three points and give them the chance to tie Arsenal on points, provided they win their game in hand.
If the latter plays out, the likelihood is that the top spot will be taken over by City on goal difference. Even still, the margin here is incredibly close, leading to a nail-biting end to this season.
With momentum on their side, it is fair to suggest that Manchester City come into this one as the clear favorites. We all know that Pep loves the possession game, and, combined with recent form, we have found this approach has managed to chip away at even the most physical and fittest of sides.
City leads the league in chances created, and they have had their fair share of high-pressure matches over recent years to deal with all that is on the line this weekend. No doubt they will have revisited footage from the 1-1 draw between the two earlier in the season, but do they have enough to get past the league’s top defense?
Naturally, Arsenal will have their sights set on this game against Manchester City. However, just a week later, they will face Newcastle, followed by a quick turnaround against Atletico Madrid, Fulham, and Atletico Madrid again. Compared with City, this is a much tougher run of games, which includes international travel and battles against one of Europe’s elite teams.
Compared with recent years, we have seen much greater depth in this Arsenal side, and Arteta has done a grand job of improving the team’s defense while still making them a threat in the final third. A lot of this is down to a high-pressing game, but this has the potential to make or break the game at City. As touched upon, City plays a high-tempo possession game, which, when up against the press, could lead to turnovers due to City mistakes or open clear gaps behind the Arsenal back line.

Taking all of this into account, we view this match as a must-win for the Gunners. However, on paper, we have to say that Manchester City comes into this one with a slight edge. Although both teams still have other cup competitions to consider, City’s upcoming FA Cup tie against Southampton will (arguably) be less of a concern than Arsenal’s game with Atletico Madrid. Not to mention that Manchester City has a league game in hand.
In short, Arsenal must perform against a side as cutthroat as City. If not, it may be a matter of how many goals they concede, rather than whether City simply gets the win. Of course, a win for Arsenal against this year’s closest title challengers should be enough to take them through to the end of the season.
