The upcoming primary election to replace retiring Michigan Senator Gary Peters is shaping up to be a prediction market wipeout in favor of progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed. However, you won’t hold that view if you’re looking exclusively at polling data.
With more than $3.29 million in total volume, the Kalshi market on who will win the Michigan Senate Democratic primary election is all but decided. Dr. El-Sayed’s “yes” contract is demanding an extremely high premium of 78 cents. Is that figure truly reflective of what voters will decide on August 4th? Let’s dig in!
There’s a lot of money riding on this primary race in the form of candidate donations and ad campaigns. There’s a stark contrast between mid-July polling numbers and what prediction market forecasters are saying, too.
We think El-Sayed is going to win the primary election on August 4th, but we also think the 78¢ per-contract price is on the steep side. The polling data barely caused a blip in the winner’s market, so there’s not much chance of El-Sayed’s price coming down much unless some other news breaks over the next two weeks.
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is clearly backing the progressive candidate from Rochester Hills, State Senator Mallory McMorrow has abandoned her campaign, and the vast majority of Kalshi traders can’t wait until this market settles.
Haley Stevens backers recently launched a multimillion-dollar ad blitz to bolster her position in the primary race, but it may not be enough (or have an impact at all). On Thursday, her campaign abruptly fired one of its consultants due to the staffer’s ties to controversial data-surveillance company Palantir.
El-Sayed’s campaign has been quick to react to the firing, pointing to it as another indicator that Stevens is captured by corporate influence. The election on August 4th will reveal which political group inside the Democratic Party carries the most weight in Michigan: the establishment or progressives. Kalshi forecasters think the progressive faction is nearly a 4-to-1 favorite to win the race.
If the latest polling numbers couldn’t shift this market, there’s not much that will happen, numbers-wise, over the next two weeks. Apart from El-Sayed hiring a consultant linked to Palantir for his own team, Kalshi traders are likely to remain adamant that he’ll win the primary and advance to the general election.
If you’re looking for a market with the potential for more volatility, you might want to seek out the “margin of victory” options that Kalshi is hosting. You can join Kalshi and start trading on the election today as long as you’re located in the United States and are at least 18 years old.
