Sunday Night Football heads to Soldier Field this weekend for an intriguing matchup between the 3-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 6-2 Chicago Bears. Both teams have won three out of their last four contests, and the Bears are on a three-game winning streak following a beatdown of the defending champion Seattle Seahawks.
The most active prediction market apps have the Bears projected at 70% to win Sunday night. It’s easy to understand why. NFL fans watched the Chicago defense force Sam Darnold out of the pocket on more than half of the Seahawks’ passing plays en route to a 34-17 MNF victory. Caleb Williams was solid as well.
Tampa Bay could have easily folded after starting the regular season with an 0-4 record and temporarily losing quarterback Baker Mayfield to a wrist injury. Yet the Buccaneers have found a way to win two consecutive games against NFC South division opponents and find themselves just a half-game behind the Carolina Panthers for a home playoff game.
We like the Buccaneers… we just don’t like them enough to choose their contracts against such an impressive Chicago Bears team. With $1.7 million already in the mix on the Kalshi NFL prediction market, the Bears’ contracts are trading at 71¢ for an outright win and 49¢ if forecasters are willing to give Tampa Bay 6.5 points.
Chicago defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons was nothing short of awesome against Seattle earlier this week. Look for Chicago to chase Baker Mayfield throughout the game and force at least two fumbles from the quarterback who is susceptible to scrambling too soon.
Rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka will be back in action for Tampa Bay this Sunday night. That’s great news for a Buccaneers squad that could take over first place in the NFC South if the Panthers lose to the Broncos in Charlotte. But the Buccaneers’ quarterback is notorious for tucking the ball and heading upfield with it as soon as the pocket begins to collapse.
The weather forecast for Soldier Field calls for no rain and temperatures around 50 degrees at kickoff. However, the 10-15 mph wind could cause Mayfield’s passes to miss their mark and further entice him to take unnecessary chances by rushing through his own protection.
Many sports fans think the Bears will dominate this game and easily cover the 6.5-point spread. We tend to agree. Chicago’s defense is simply too capable and Caleb Williams is playing too well for the Bears not to have a legitimate shot at blowing Tampa Bay out of the water in front of a national audience on Sunday Night Football.
This single-game market is unlikely to move much between now and kickoff. Both teams will have extra incentives to take over their respective divisions, but the Bears won’t know if they have a chance at moving up to first place in the NFC North since Minnesota won’t play until Monday night (against the Buffalo Bills).
