Since revamping its Politics Hub, the Kalshi prediction market app has seen increased trading volume across the board. One of the most popular markets for this year’s midterms is which party will take control of the US Senate once voters have cast their general election votes in November.

With more than $8.8 million already riding on whether the GOP or the Democratic Party will control the Senate, the Republicans are favored, at 54%, to retain control of the upper chamber of Congress. So should traders immediately flock to Kalshi and pick up “yes” options at 55¢ to continue their majority in the Senate? Let’s find out!

2026 general election results – US Senate control winner picks

Abdul El-Sayed’s razor-thin victory in the Democratic primary election for Michigan’s next Senator will likely remain THE major story in this market, all the way up to November’s general election where El-Sayed will face off against Republican Mike Rogers.

The primary election turned out to be much closer than many forecasters on Kalshi predicted, with El-Sayed defeating Haley Stevens by less than 15,000 votes (or approximately one percentage point). The Democrats must hold this seat in November to maintain their chances at regaining control of the US Senate.

But can the progressive candidate hold off challenger Mike Rogers in the general election and come out victorious in the process? Traders’ opinions on this specific race will likely significantly shape their choice for which party will enjoy control of the US Senate once new members are seated in early 2027.

Preparing for the upcoming news cycle for US Senate control

Much like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for Michigan’s open Senate seat is a media darling on both sides of the political spectrum. Mainstream “liberal” and “conservative” hosts can’t stop talking about him, and “new media” outlets from social media and YouTube are likewise packing their programming with opinions and analysis on the massively educated former Rhodes Scholar.

Yes, the economy, immigration enforcement, and the Middle East conflict will continue to garner headlines between now and November, but the most-watched individual race will still be El-Sayed versus Mike Rogers. If the Democrats are able to pick up gains in Maine (by defeating Susan Collins) and North Carolina, the rest may fall into place.

The “wildcard” factor for US Senate Control

Although he’s not running for reelection this year, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman could play a major role in whether the Republicans are able to retain control of the US Senate by abandoning the Democratic Party. Fetterman has dismissed rumors that he might switch parties altogether, but has also stated that he would exclude himself from the Democratic Party if it officially adopts an anti-Israel stance.

Since a 50-50 tie in the Senate as a result of the November general midterm elections would still favor the Republicans, look for Fetterman to become “front and center” in political debates leading up to November 3rd if polls have the Democrats winning control of the Senate by the narrowest of margins.

If the Democrats hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate following the November midterms, Fetterman could very well go back on his original promise and wind up switching parties to bring the Senate to a 50-50 tie, which would retain control for the Republicans.
