US Midterm elections

After months of waiting, prediction market trades related to the balance of power will finally be decided. Voters across the country will show up for in-person voting tomorrow to decide which party controls the House and Senate.

Some traders are predicting a Democratic sweep, while others believe the Republicans will retain control of the upper chamber. Either way, the settlement date for this $100 million Kalshi market could occur as soon as tomorrow night or drag on until February 1st, 2027.

Our Balance of Power Picks for the US Midterms

There are two principal options for the “Balance of Power” midterm elections market on Kalshi: one in which the Democrats sweep control of Congress and another in which the Republicans retain control of the Senate. The combined, percentage-based likelihood of one of those outcomes occurring is roughly 96%, according to traders who use political prediction sites.

We’re currently choosing contracts for the Democrats to win the House and Republicans to retain at least 50 seats in the Senate. Our picks are based solely on (what we believe to be) relatively low contract prices of just 25¢ on the two-leg combo trade.

Remember, in order for this specific trade to be successful, both results must come true. Since Democratic control of the House is all but assured heading into tomorrow’s midterms, we believe there is value in picking up contracts on that to occur and for the GOP to edge out Dems in the upper chamber of Congress.

Favorite Picks: Congressional Balance of Power – Dems win House and the GOP retains at least 50 Senate seats, Switch to Democratic sweep? – Yes if combo prices drop below 58¢

The cases for quick vs. prolonged market resolution

Kalshi traders who participate in the midterm markets will want to check out the full terms and conditions linked to the outcomes. For the most part, markets should resolve by the end of the week. However, that doesn’t take into account the possibility of recounts, close races, litigation, and the swearing-in of new congressional members in 2027.

Depending on how close the balance of power margin is, there could be multiple legal challenges put forth after Election Day has come and gone. The final possible date for market resolution, listed by Kalshi, is February 1st, 2027.

We simply won’t know which outcomes may be challenged in the courts until the results start coming in tomorrow night and party officials begin reacting to them.

Races to keep an eye on

US Senate races in Texas, Maine, Michigan, Alaska, Ohio, Kansas, and Iowa remain extremely competitive ahead of tomorrow. The congressional balance of power results will directly hinge on the outcomes of those elections. As of Monday morning, the Kalshi midterms hub has five of those contests forecast as leaning Democratic, one as a “likely” Democratic win (Michigan), and one as a toss-up (Iowa).

Trading volume on key Senate races is expected to be “through the roof” tomorrow, with dramatic market changes taking place once polls close and results begin trickling out. Serious election traders are probably going to have US election coverage in “multi-view” on their screens as they scan results and commentary from numerous media outlets.

Generally, statewide polls will close during the evening hours local time tomorrow. Each state has its own rules concerning which polls close and when Election Day results can start to be published.
