Source: Texas Tech Will Fire Billy Gillispie As Soon As They Can Legally Do So
Embattled Texas Tech head basketball coach Billy Gillispie will not return as Red Raiders coach this coming season, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Earlier this week, CBS' Jeff Goodman published a scathing report alleging numerous acts of mistreatment within the Texas Tech men's basketball program, including forcing injured players to practice. Gillispie has not responded to these allegations, having checked into a Lubbock hospital last week with an unidentified malady. He left the hospital Thursday, but appears to still be on sick leave.
That plays into his job status, as we're told the Family and Medical Leave Act prevents Gillispie from being fired while on his sick leave. Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt is reportedly simply waiting for the moment when Gillispie's dismissal can be legally executed before giving the former Texas A & M and Kentucky coach the axe.
