As we head into Week 2 of the season, NFL odds have shifted at social sportsbooks.
Several teams, including the Chiefs, suffered defeats in Week 1 causing drifting odds.
The NFL Week 2 schedule features exciting games including the Chiefs v the Eagles.
Although Week 1 of the NFL season saw business as usual for many of the top teams, there were some surprising results. The Bills came from behind to beat the Ravens, and Super Bowl finalists the Chiefs lost against the Chargers.
How do these results impact NFL odds at social sportsbooks? While it’s still too early to tell for many teams, we’ve seen a subtle shift in odds for key sides. As we head into Week 2, we’ll explore how these shifts might affect how you bet on games like the Chiefs v the Eagles, or the Bills v the Jets.
Before the new NFL season started, several teams were hailed as favorites to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy. They included last year’s winners, the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as runners-up the Kansas City Chiefs. The Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills were also hotly tipped.
Fast forward to Week 1 and the Chiefs and Ravens both lost their first game. In fact, the Ravens lost to the Buffalo Bills in a thrilling encounter with a one point score line difference of 41-40 for the Bills.
With Week 1 fixtures throwing up some unexpected results, we’ve seen some major odds shifts at social sportsbooks:
The Chargers managed to achieve a shock win over the Chiefs in their opening game, securing victory 27-21. The Chiefs opened as 2.5-3 point favorites and had a -18% projection to be the number one seeding in the AFC. That’s now dropped to 7.5%.
It’s too early to fade the Chiefs but a strong second round game is essential to keep them in contention.
The Dolphins began this season as slight underdogs but suffered a heavy 33-8 defeat against the Colts. This was sufficient to call for a player meeting and has caused a sharp swing downwards in Dolphin odds.
Initially, the Lions were favorites to win this game but the Packer’s acquisition of Micah Parsons caused a mega shift in public perception and numbers. By the starting whistle, the Packers had become 2.5 underdogs, a prediction that proved to be correct when the Packers triumphed 27-13.
On Friday, the Packers managed to cement this victory by winning 27-18 over the Commanders, giving them the ideal 2-0 start to the season.
Again, the Bears began their journey this season as underdogs but closed as -1.5 favorites. This was prompted by a sharp upturn in public backing suggesting that there’s a lot of confidence in the Bears to go the distance this year. However, they ended the game in second place following a fourth quarter resurgence from the Vikings.
If you’re a little breathless after Week 1, we hear you, it’s been an action-packed week! Looking ahead to Week 2, we’ve selected some of the top games you might want to consider betting on:
The Chiefs take on the Eagles in a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl. The Chiefs are coming from a Week 1 loss and are facing internal issues due to injury and Rashee Rice’s suspension.
The Eagles are slight favorites, at -1.5 currently, but the Chiefs will have the home field advantage. Plus, it’s unlikely that star QB Patrick Mahomes will let his team go 0-2. Whatever happens, the outcome of this match could be crucial to how the odds for the rest of the season pan out.
Key player Ed Oliver has now officially been ruled out of the Bill’s next game. Both sides are also facing injury issues following Week 1 games, potentially limiting the depth of each lineup.
The Bills opened as -6.5 favorites but these odds have been adjusted following injury news to -6. Going by Week 1, this looks set to be a high scoring game, and the over/ under is set between 46 and 47.5 points. Josh Allen (current NFL MVP) was the standout star of the Bill’s opener, leading to a popular prop pick of passing yards above 231.5.
This game is heavy on storyline interest as head coaches Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll face another twist in their ongoing rivalry. The Chargers had a decisive victory over the Chiefs and are favored in this game by 3-3.5 points. Looking ahead, they’re also now the projected winners of the AFC West.
