The Banned Boca Raton Women's Professional Soccer Team Will Keep Playing In Zombie Form
Women's Professional Soccer's year-long battle with its ultimate nemesis, magicJack owner and giant motor-tricycle aficionado Dan Borislow, has finally come to a close. WPS may have escaped extinction last month, but they can't escape Dan Borislow.
Borislow, who owned the Boca Raton-based magicJack for a season and essentially ran it into the ground by refusing to cooperate with the league, had filed a temporary injunction suit against WPS to halt the termination of his franchise. Today's hearing was canceled, however, when the two parties reached a compromise of sorts: Borislow will drop his lawsuit and WPS will allow him to operate a team that will play "several" exhibition games against league teams for the next two seasons.
Jennifer Hitchon, executive director of the WPS Players Union, acknowledged that while many people are dismayed that Borislow will continue to be a part of the league, the Union is hopeful that the team's new iteration will help the league.
As of now, Borislow does not have any players on his team—but in a sad twist for WPS's efforts to scrub him from the organization, his rebooted magicJack exhibition team is actually totally appealing to some of the league's best unsigned players. On a more relaxed schedule, they'll have more time and freedom to pursue their own interests, like Dancing With The Stars. Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe, Hope Solo, and Christie Rampone—four of the women's national team's most recognizable players—are expected to play for the man who memorably called the league's then-commissioner an "idiot" in an email.
"It's a great way to showcase a lot of the United States' talent," Borislow said of the deal in an email to espnW today. "It's a really good day for soccer."
He added: "It's a huge thing for South Florida."
