Top Seed Simona Halep Upset By Unseeded Hsieh Su-wei, Wimbledon's Women's Side Remains In Total Chaos
credits: Ben Curtis | source: [object Object] No. 1 seed Simona Halep was upset at Wimbledon Saturday by unseeded Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, continuing the insane and chaotic run of upsets on the women’s side.
Su-wei’s triumph now means that all of No. 1 seed Halep, No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki, No. 3 seed Garbiñe Muguruza, No. 4 seed Sloane Stephens, No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina, No. 6 seed Caroline Garcia, No. 8 seed Petra Kvitova, No. 9 seed Venus Williams, and No. 10 seed Madison Keys have all been eliminated via upset before the fourth round. Nine of the top 10 seeds are gone, leaving only No. 7 seed Karolina Pliskova, who’ll face No. 20 seed Kiki Bertens on Monday. Bertens eliminated Venus Williams in straight sets Friday.
Halep had two match points in the final set, including with the serve up 5-3, but lost the last five consecutive games to bomb out of the tournament. Per ESPN, Halep became the first No. 1 seed to be eliminated before the round of 16 since Serena Williams in 2014. Serena, by the way, is still very much alive, and will face Evgeniya Rodina of Russia on Monday.
