Ultras Start Fireworks Fight Before Europa League Game [Update]
Spartak Moscow traveled to Bilbao to play Athletic in the Europa League’s Round of 32, and as is typially the case whenever large groups of Russian soccer hooligans travel to European games, some shit went down.
Here we have several supporters clashing near the San Mamés stadium and shooting fireworks at each other. It’s not precisely clear what’s happening in the video (besides the aforementioned fireworks shooting), but that at least five people have been arrested and that a Basque police officer was hospitalized. Spartak need to beat Athletic at least 3-0 to advance past this second leg.
Update (5:38 p.m. ET): The officer who had been hospitalized, 50-year-old Inocencio Arias García, died in the hospital after suffering a heart attack. Per Marca:
The agent collapsed during the police intervention that took place when fans of both teams met in the esplanade of the San Mamés stadium, moments after a flare dropped by a Russian fan fell with him.
