10 Years Later, Steve Bartman Remains A Tragedy
He was a diehard Cubs fan, the sort who listens to the radio while at the game, and he had one of the best seats in the house. The Cubs were on the verge of the World Series. It should've been the happiest moment of his life.
Today is the 10th anniversary of the Cubs' NLCS choke, helped along by Bartman deflecting a foul ball, with Moises Alou unknowingly bringing the wrath of a city down on the poor guy. He almost immediately went into hiding, and now belongs more to the realm of myth.
The story below is excerpted from Will Leitch's Are We Winning?, and is an attempt to put this tragedy in human terms. (Photo of Bartman in college via)
