40-Year-Old Sheryl Swoopes Unretires To Join Something Called "Tulsa Shock"
Sheryl Swoopes retired from the WNBA in 2008 after averaging 7 and 4 for the Seattle Storm, her worst such figures as a pro. As of 2005, Swoopes endorsed lesbian cruise line Olivia, so presumably she redeemed some vouchers to travel to Greece last year. There she played for Ravenna Esperides, alongside such luminaries as Thea Paschopoulou and Dora Matrogiannidou.
But Anthi Hatzigiakoumi must have been a ball hog, because Swoopes has decided to join the Tulsa Shock for the upcoming WNBA season. Tulsa—coached by former Arkansas men's coach Nolan Richardson—already devotes one roster spot to a publicity stunt (Marion Jones, age 35, in her second WNBA season). Oh, they were also 6-28 last year, so anyone probably would have made a nice addition.
And who knows? Maybe Swoopes can still ball. In 2005—six short years ago—she won the MVP playing for the Houston Comets. And look where the Comets are now! (Folded.)
Swoopes ought to quote Jefferson (not Richard), who said in 1825, "All dead, all dead, and ourselves left alone amidst a new generation whom we know not, and who knows not us." Maybe TJ could put up 10 and 6 in today's WNBA.
