49ers Nix Girl Scouts Stadium Sleepover In Favor Of A More Profitable Event [Update]
The San Francisco 49ers had an agreement with Girl Scout troops around Northern California: The girls who sold the most cookies would get to visit the team’s stadium in May, meet cheerleaders, and enjoy pizza and movies on the field. This week, the team reneged on the deal.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, the 49ers told the Girl Scouts of Northern California Tuesday that the event was canceled. The contract gave the team the option to call off the sleepover at any time, so it did, in favor of a bigger, unnamed concert.
The 49ers offered to reschedule, but the organization will instead take its deposit back. Girl Scouts of Northern California CEO Marina Park didn’t want to burn the girls a second time:
The scouts said the 49ers offered alternative dates for the sleepover in July but Park said the Girl Scouts didn’t want to be disappointed again if their event was canceled at the last minute.
At least team CEO Jed York will deftly handle the public reaction to this business decision. Let’s check what he tweeted yesterday:
Update (8:45 p.m.): The 49ers will host the girls, after all.
