5 Big Overreactions to the 2026 NBA Offseason

As August winds down, there’s only a few more NBA moves still available to be made.

NBA general managers all over the league will be returning to their home markets after vacationing following the busy months of June and July. Ahead of the final wave of NBA news, let’s take a look at a few big overreactions to the 2026 NBA offseason.

Detroit Pistons could be a play-in team

Right now, the Pistons look to be in big trouble.

J.B. Bickerstaff’s Pistons took the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Eastern Conference Semifinals before getting eliminated from the NBA Playoffs in Game 7. It was another year of growth for a young Pistons team, but could that have been the pinnacle?

Cade Cunningham needs an MVP season, because the Pistons didn’t make any big moves this offseason. They added Isaiah Joe and John Collins plus veteran additions like Taurean Prince and Gary Harris.

In a new-look East, that might not be enough starpower to hang with top teams like the New York Knicks, Cavs, Philadelphia 76ers and others.

Philadelphia 76ers are real title contenders

The Sixers had a tremendous offseason when they acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George and draft picks.

And then they added the greatest player ever.

LeBron James signed on a veteran minimum deal to join Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe. And in a league with eight different NBA champions over the course of the last eight seasons, Philadelphia turned themselves into a legitimate title contender this offseason.

Los Angeles Lakers have literally no chance, and neither do the Houston Rockets

The Lakers took down the Rockets in the first round of the NBA postseason even without Luka Doncic, as LeBron was superhuman.

Kevin Durant missed games in that series, but neither of these teams have a chance in the Western Conference, which should be dominated by the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs once again.

Giannis Antetokounmpo will help the Miami Heat, but not that much

The Heat are certainly a better team with Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson, the sharpshooter who quietly joined Miami last week.

Antetokounmpo needs to stay healthy, though. And in the postseason? This team could be dangerous if Antetokounmpo is healthy – but they might not have enough spacing and shooting even with Thompson signing on.

New York Knicks won’t repeat as NBA champions

The Knicks won 53 games and then got hot in the NBA Playoffs, riding that momentum all the way to the NBA Championship.

But championship hangovers in this league are real, as the last eight NBA championship winners have learned. It’s no guarantee that the Knicks will repeat, especially in this new-look East with a lot of top-end talent. They have chemistry, but other than that? Another quiet offseason in New York, and that might not be a good thing for the Knicks in a reshaped East.
