5-star WR Calvin Russell delays signing with Syracuse
Miami Northwestern's Calvin Russell Jr. takes a selfie with his state medal after his team won the Class 3A championship against Raines on Dec. 14, 2024. Five-star wide receiver Calvin Russell, committed to Syracuse since July, said he would not be signing on Wednesday, the opening day of the early signing period.
He made the announcement at the signing ceremony at his high school, Miami Northwestern in Florida.
"It's been a hard three or four days," Russell said Wednesday. "I've been thinking and I won't be signing today."
247Sports lists Russell as the No. 2 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 23 overall player. He is 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds.
He reportedly is reconsidering offers from Michigan and Miami, as well as Syracuse. He is expected to play college basketball at whichever school he chooses.
Earlier Wednesday, Russell's high school teammate Tedarius Hughes signed with the Orange. He is a top-50 cornerback.
The Orange finished 3-9 in the 2025 season. They lost eight straight games after quarterback Steve Angeli suffered a torn Achilles.
