UFC Edmonton Best Bets, Predictions and Fight Picks

For the fourth time in its history, the Octagon finds itself in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, as UFC Edmonton takes place on October 17 at Rogers Place.

The main event will feature a welterweight contender's battle, as Joaquin Buckley takes on Mike Malott.

Buckley comes into this fight week with a lot of focus, as he looks to bounce back from losses to Kamaru Usman and Sean Brady. Malott, meanwhile, is riding a four-fight win streak, entering this bout off his finish of former title challenger Gilbert Burns earlier this year.

The co-main event will be a pivotal battle at women’s flyweight between two ladies still seeking their first title fight, as Erin Blanchfield faces Jasmine Jasudavicius. The 14-2 Blanchfield comes into this bout off a submission of Tracy Cortez at UFC 322 last year. Jasudavicius, meanwhile, enters off a win over Karine Silva earlier this year.

The rest of the UFC Edmonton main card will see Kyle Nelson vs. Cristian Perez, Marc-Andre Barriault vs. Kyle Daukaus, Louis Jourdain vs. Timothy Cuamba, and Mandel Nallo vs. Nate Landwehr.

MARC-ANDRE BARRIAULT VS KYLE DAUKAUS

Barriault is a gritty and aggressive fighter who looks to pressure opponents with his combinations and power. The downside is that this fight strategy can leave openings, and he's now on a harsh skid, having lost five of his last six. For Daukaus, meanwhile, things have been great in this return to the UFC. He scored finishes of Michel Pereira and Gerald Meerschaert, and despite losing to Bo Nickal, he was granted the opportunity to compete at UFC Freedom 250.

Daukaus possesses some strong clinch and takedown abilities, and he could probably give Barriault a run with his reach and striking. Barriault will need to put this fight at a pace that makes Daukaus uncomfortable. The more control Daukaus gets early, the better chance he has of getting the finish.

MANDEL NALLO VS NATE LANDWEHR

If you like fireworks in your fights, get ready for a potential show this one. Nallo is an aggressive fighter with great finishing ability, and his power and pressure has helped elevate him to a UFC prospect worth keeping an eye on. But when you go up against someone like Landwehr, even when on a three-fight skid, you got to be able to take what you dish out. Landwehr also brings a high work rate; he is someone who can push back and fight through adversity.

If Nallo can find his power early and avoid getting into a messy brawl, he could overwhelm Landwehr. Otherwise, the longer the fight goes and the more of a brawl it becomes, the better Landwehr’s chances.

TANNER BOSER VS JHONATA DINIZ

Boser is a Canadian heavyweight who is looking to bounce back from a loss in his UFC return, a KO loss to Gokhan Saricam in April. He’s a mobile heavyweight who looks to rely on his movement to help set up combinations, disrupting opponents’ flow as he looks to find power. His chin has come under question in the later stages of his career, however, and Diniz could take advantage of that with seven KO/TKOs in his nine victories.

Diniz is a powerful former kickboxer, and his striking can help give him a significant edge, so long as he’s able to control the action and cut off the cage from Boser. If he can pressure Boser, he can get that 10th victory with another finish. But if Boser can mix up his attacks and make Diniz work to close distance, Boser could walk away with his first taste of victory in the Octagon after so long.
