Akron football has been one of the worst programs in football for the couple decades. They haven’t finished the year with a winning record since 2015 and have had more seasons with one or fewer wins (5) than seasons with a winning record over the last 20 years.

It’s a shame that the Zips have fallen on such hard times, because they have always felt like a team with the facilities to consistently compete in the MAC. They have one of the nicest training facilities in the entire conference, they’re located in a state with an abundance of high school talent, and they have a stadium that has only 255 fewer seats than the largest in their conference.

Most importantly, they’re led by head coach Joe Moorhead, one of the more talented coaches in the MAC, and even he hasn’t been able to turn things around.

The Zips decided they need more NIL to bring talent into the program, since what they’re doing now isn’t working. However, their genius idea to get more people into the stadium and more money back into their NIL is something out of Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro.

Akron decided to let one season ticket holder call the opening drive of their home opener against FCS Robert Morris. On the very surface, this is a genius marketing and fundraising opportunity. People with no connection to the university are buying up season tickets and doing everything in their power to get a chance to actually call plays for a real Division I college football program.

Then when you think about this for longer than a second, you’ll realize how embarrassing a charade this is. Under no circumstances should anyone outside of the Akron coaching staff be allowed to call plays, and it’s a shame the program has fallen on such hard times that they’re allowing such a dumb gimmick to occur.

Honestly, I just feel bad for Coach Moorhead. I’m sure he had zero say in something like this going down, and now he has to pretend he’s somehow okay with it. Whoever came up with this idea has essentially reduced their football to a clown show at a time when it finally felt like it was starting to turn a few things around.

Of course, you could say that only beating your arch-rival Kent State twice in the last seven years, and zero winning seasons in that period of time, is the actual clown show, and you wouldn’t be too wrong. I still feel that this is a complete joke of a decision, and no team at the FBS level should degrade itself to this extent. Leave these hijinks to Jackie Moon and the Flint Tropics.
