Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images Henry Davis had two hits including a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to back up a stellar start by Andrew Heaney and lead the host Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday afternoon.
Davis's fourth homer this season came off Phillies' starter Ranger Suarez (4-1) and was his second in as many games. Suarez pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five on 97 pitches.
Heaney allowed one run on four hits and no walks while striking out five over six innings but left the game in the seventh with a left calf cramp.
Heaney, who threw 73 pitches, gave up a double to Alec Bohm to open the inning. He then threw a wild pitch, which allowed Bohm to advance to third. After falling behind in the count 2-0 to Nick Castellanos, before exiting the game.
Isaac Mattson (1-0), who was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis Saturday, bailed Pittsburgh out of the jam by striking out Castellanos looking and then inducing J.T. Realmuto and pinch hitter Bryson Stott to fly out. David Bednar picked up his eighth save after pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Phillies played without Bryce Harper, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with right wrist inflammation.
Kyle Schwarber hit his 20th home run of the season off Heaney with one out in the top of the first inning to account for the Phillies' only run. Castellanos and Johan Rojas had Philadelphia's only other hits -- both singles. Rojas made a great running catch in center to rob Jared Triolo of extra bases in the bottom of the second.
Nick Gonzales tripled in the bottom of the first and scored on an RBI single by Andrew McCutchen to tie the game at 1.
The Phillies selected the contract of infielder Otto Kemp, who made his major league debut and went 0-for-3. Philadelphia also right-handed pitcher Alan Rangel to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and recalled right-hander Daniel Robert.
Pittsburgh placed catcher Endy Rodriguez (right elbow inflammation) on the 10-day IL and selected the contract of catcher Brett Sullivan from Triple-A Indianapolis. The Pirates also designated reliever Joey Wentz for assignment.
