The win was overshadowed in the 74th minute when Angel City defender Savy King was tended to near midfield by multiple trainers for nearly 10 minutes. The 20-year-old was placed on a stretcher and carted off the field with an undisclosed medical issue before she was taken to a local hospital.
Press' goal in the 66th minute was her first of the season in her seventh game, all off the bench. The 36-year-old former United States women's national team mainstay returned last season after sitting out two years because of an ACL injury that required multiple surgeries.
Angelina Anderson made seven saves as Angel City (4-2-2, 14 points) earned its first clean sheet of the season.
Angel City was playing without interim head coach Sam Laity, who was serving a one-game suspension after receiving a red card in a 4-3 road victory over the Washington Spirit last week.
Mandy McGlynn made three saves for the Royals (1-6-1, 4 points), who failed to score a goal for the third consecutive match and have been outscored 5-0 in the stretch.
Press' goal came from the right side of the penalty area when she cut back near the end line and fired a shot just out of McGlynn's reach toward the opposite post.
Thompson scored her fourth of the season in the seventh minute of stoppage time when she rebounded the ball into the goal off the right post.
