Angels aim to hand Yankees fifth consecutive loss

The Yankees carry a season-worst four-game losing streak into their Tuesday home game against the Los Angeles Angels.
New York was shut out 2-0 on Sunday as the host Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep, then lost 1-0 in 11 innings to the Angels on Monday in the opener of a four-game set. The Yankees have scored four runs total during their losing streak and are 4-for-36 (.111) with runners in scoring position in that span.
On Monday, Stanton went 2-for-4 in his season debut after missing the first 70 games due to an elbow injury. The Yankees went 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position while finishing with eight hits and stranding 12.
"I thought enough guys up and down the lineup had some hard-hit balls, had some good contact, but when you're not hitting the ball out of the ballpark and you're having a hard time scoring runs, you got to take advantage of some situational things that come up," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.
The losing streak is New York's longest since a four-game skid from July 2-5, 2024. The Yankees last dropped five straight in August 2023, when they lost nine in a row.
The Yankees are 7-9 in their past 16 games following a stretch of 16 wins in 20 games. New York was held to three runs or fewer for the fifth straight game on Monday.
The Angels are on their first three-game winning streak at the current Yankee Stadium. Nolan Schanuel's 11th-inning double led Los Angeles to its first 1-0 win over the Yankees since 2008.
Schanuel, who ended the night 2-for-5, is hitting .324 (46-for-142) in his past 39 games.
The Angels' victory capped a memorable first trip to Yankee Stadium for Christian Moore. The 22-year-old second baseman went 0-for-6 over the weekend in Baltimore to start his major league career, but he tripled in the eighth inning for his first big-league hit, scored the tiebreaking run and then threw out Paul Goldschmidt at the plate in the bottom of the 11th to preserve the lead.
"Nobody made a mistake," Angels manager Ron Washington said. "We happen to get the hit that made it work, and you just got to hang (in). You just can't be making mistakes in those kind of games."
Will Warren (4-3, 4.86 ERA), who is coming off his second career scoreless outing, will start for the Yankees on Tuesday. The right-hander got a no-decision on Thursday in Kansas City when he allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings during New York's 1-0 victory. It was the ninth time in 14 starts this season that Warren allowed four hits or fewer.
Warren's only previous outing against the Angels also was his first career home start. On Aug. 7, 2024, he allowed a grand slam to Zach Neto and surrendered eight runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Los Angeles' Kyle Hendricks (4-6, 5.20 ERA) will attempt to win a third straight start for the first time since June 2023 for the Chicago Cubs. Hendricks last pitched on Wednesday against the A's, when he allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings during a 6-5 win.
The right-hander has no decisions and a 3.27 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees. Goldschmidt is 14-for-52 (.269) against Hendricks. DJ LeMahieu is 6-for-22 (.273) off the Angels starter, and Stanton is 0-for-9 in their matchups.
