Arizona signs Tommy Lloyd to 5-year extension

Arizona basketball coach Tommy Lloyd will remain with the university long-term after signing a five-year contract extension on Monday.

The agreement, which still needs final approval by the school's board of regents, lasts until "at least 2029," according to a news release.

Lloyd will receive $5.25 million in total compensation in the first year of the extension, escalating to $6 million in Year 5.

"I am energized by the support of our fans, our players, our alumni, President Robbins, the Board of Regents and our donors," Lloyd said in a statement. "All of us are aligned on maintaining a highly competitive and nationally recognized basketball program that provides a great experience for the student athletes. We will continue to honor the Wildcat basketball heritage and give everything we have to make people proud to say ‘Bear Down!'"

Lloyd, 49, is in his third season at the helm at Arizona after 20 years working as an assistant coach at Gonzaga. He won multiple national Coach of the Year awards in his first season, 2021-22, when the Wildcats went 33-4.

Arizona is 20-5 (11-3 Pac-12) this season, making Lloyd 81-16 in his first 97 games on the job.

"Tommy has proven to be a championship coach, an exceptional leader and recruiter, and has reinvigorated Wildcat pride by transforming the University of Arizona men's basketball program back into one of the top programs in the nation," University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins said in a statement. "We are thrilled that he will remain a Wildcat for years to come."

The extension comes on the same day that Arizona named Missouri athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois to the same position.

Reed-Francois reportedly signed a five-year contract to replace Dave Heeke, who was fired last month after seven years.
