Uh, Mr. Selig, We're Not Sure We Can Get A Crane There In Time
From Fox News' homepage this morning. When we first saw it, it had us running for the phones. First off, what about all the people inside? Secondly, uh, it's not retractable is it? Third ... who gives Bud Selig the authority? Where does he get off? Can he just roam the countryside, ripping off peo...
Astros Are Texas Toast
News And Notes From A Crazy, Crazy Game • You know what would have been kind of funny? If Astros manager Phil Garner, just a split second after throwing that chair, realized that Craig Biggio's wife had been standing right behind him. "God-DAMN it ... oh. Uh, sorry, Patty." • Does that home run p...

Artest's Penthouse Shoot In A Grand Tradition
Well, the December edition of Penthouse has hit the stands, and everybody's favorite el hombre de muy loco Ron Artest is on the cover (ESPN has a nice rundown of the interview here). We don't have much more to add — though we wonder if the nice elderly people Artest is such buddies with in Indiana...

The Cavs' Super Secret Club (No Girls Allowed!)
Free Darko has a find that's making us giggle like an idiot: Apparently, Cleveland Cavaliers stars LeBron James, Larry Hughes and Damon Jones (known around here as "two-and-a-half men") have come up with a "secret handshake that involves two low-fives, then a wave, then posing with their arms cros...

Previewing The Inevitable Umpiring Fiascos
As mentioned regularly here, we're not that much into gambling, mainly because we find watching sports stressful enough without our parents' rent check riding on it, but thankfully our pals at Oddjack has a stronger taste for vice than we do. And he has unearthed a useful tidbit today, one we've a...
Why Cold Pizza Went All Dead Air Today
So we've been investigating this whole "Cold Pizza" burnout this morning — their show was taken off the air, mid-program, because of "technical difficulties" — and we've heard several different theories, including the rather far-fetched one that they decided, right in the middle of the show, to ca...
Why Your Hometown Columnist Sucks: Bud Poliquin
There must be a school out there, some sort of Hogwarts-inspired academy where columnists go to learn the art of lousy column writing. It can't just be a coincidence that our worst sports columnists, people such as Woody Paige, Jay Mariotti and this week's featured guest, Bud Poliquin, are all see...
Sad, Drunk Cardinals Fans (Aren't They All?)
As the process of destroying Busch Stadium begins in earnest — that picture was taken yesterday; that large object in the outfield is not, in fact, Larry Walker — a reader sends us this pretty awesome video of two drunken, crying Cardinals fans as they refused to leave Busch Stadium after the NLCS...

FoxTrax: Edifier, Clutterer Or Some Other Big Word?
The New York Times has a long story today about the "space-needy data" and "edifying nature" of FOX'S FoxTrax, that thing that Fox introduced for the World Series, which tracks the speed, curve and location of each pitch. The NYT is crazy about the device, and we agree that, done properly, it's a ...
Giants Owner Wellington Mara Dies
Longtime Giants owner — and just about the only sports owner we can ever remember professing affection for, if just because he was old and spindly — Wellington Mara has died at the age of 89. Mara was one of the most influential owners in sports history, pioneering the notion of sharing television...
Mark Blount Shocks Us Again
You thought you knew Celtics roster filler Mark Blount. You thought he was just the portly guy who played just hard enough to get an ill-advised free agent contract, and then spent the rest of his time inhaling Cheetos. But nope. Turns out, according to our friends at YAYSports!, Blount is the typ...
You're Crazy, Man ... You're Crazy
The Wizard Of Odds sends us this photo of some chubby fellow streaking down the sidelines at Saturday's Cal Poly-Montana game....

Sky Closing In On Astros
For the first time this postseason, the roof at Enron Field/Dick Cheney Field/Minute Maid Park will be open this evening, and that has just about everyone but the White Sox unhappy. In the other postseason games, the roof was closed, and it made for a deafening atmosphere that greatly benefited th...
ESPN2 Ratings Shoot Through Roof
It's pouring freezing rain in New York City right now, which might be why ESPN2's "Cold Pizza" is not airing right now, after experiencing "technical difficulties." (Of course, the "Today" show appears to be doing all right. We're sure they each spend the same money on staff.)...
