Avalanche D Cale Makar among Norris Trophy finalists
Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar was named a Norris Trophy finalist for the fourth time in his career on Wednesday.
Makar, who won the award in 2021-22, finished second in the previous campaign and third last season.
He joined Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes and Nashville Predators captain Roman Josi in being named finalists for the award, which is presented annually to the defensive player who "demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position."
Makar, 25, recorded 90 points (21 goals, 69 assists) in 77 games this season. His 1.17 points per game led the NHL among defensemen.
Hughes, 24, led all NHL defensemen in points (92) to go along with 17 goals and 75 assists in 82 games this season. His plus/minus rating of plus-38 was fourth best in the league.
A first-time finalist for the award, Hughes would be the first player in franchise history to win it while skating with the Canucks.
Josi, 33, led all NHL defensemen in goals (23) and finished with 62 assists and 85 points while playing in all 82 games. He won the Norris Trophy in 2019-20 and finished second last season to then-San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson.
