Before The Live Blog: Pour Out A Little Splash From The Mini-Keg Tonight For ICCC President Robert Paxton
You may recall on Monday when I posted a DUAN! story about Iowa Central Community College president Robert Paxton's ridiculous boat party pictures that were published in the Des Moines Register. The photos caused quite a stir in sleepy central Iowa academia. Unfortunately, Paxton's contention that the photos were "harmless" didn't go over too well with his school's board of trustees, who asked for his resignation yesterday. Getting back to that post, it appears that I may have slighted some of the Tritons:
I am writing in regards to comments made in your article about the Iowa Community College President, Robert Paxton. While I respect your right to freedom of speech, I was disappointed with comments made about the students who attend the college. You wrote,"What kind of message do Paxton's actions not only give to the students- those devout, impressionable ICCC Tritons- but to their parents who have pumped hundreds of dollars into the hopes that their children could one day take their ICCC associate degree and earn a managerial position at a Fort Dodge family restaurant." This comment, in my opinion, is putting down hard-working, motivated students who are already dealing with the embarrassment surrounding the actions of their college president. Do you really think comments like this are necessary in the face of the seriousness of the president's actions? Should anyone be putting down students who are enrolled in college classes trying to attain higher education in order to expand their future opportunities? I truly think that by making comments like the one above that the focus is being shifted to the wrong place. The president's actions are no fault of the students that attend ICCC, therefore this should not be about them or about the opinions ousiders have regarding community colleges.
Now I know how Jay Mariotti feels. ******* Anyway, tonight we kick-off college football with NC-State-Stanford and Matt Sussman's Live Blog Wiggity-Womp. Come for the football; stay for the Bingo. Tomorrow is a "half day" here at Deadspin which means that we'll bag out around 3 p.m. and leave to aimlessly twist in the intertubes earlier than usual. But Saturday and Sunday most (if not all) your college football opening weekend festivities will be handled by myself, Monday Morning Punter, and the mysterious Canadian, Gourmet Spud. Now, go enjoy Sussman's genius. Thank you for your continued support of Tritonspin.
