Benches Clear In Red Sox-Rays When Yunel Escobar Steals Third
After the Rays built a five-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, Yunel Escobar stole third base. A couple of Red Sox players saw that as disrespectful, and it wasn't long before benches cleared and players pushed each other around.
After Escobar took third with no throw by catcher A.J. Pierzynski, Boston's David Ross yelled at Escobar from the dugout. The Rays shortstop chirped back, and hey, there's Jonny Gomes coming into frame, going after Escobar.
Players from both benches ran onto the field, and more shoving occurred, but tempers eventually cooled down. If anything, it was fun to see another chapter in the Boston-Tampa Bay rivalry.
Escobar, Gomes, and Sean Rodriguez were ejected from the game as a result. The Rays won, 8-5.
Also, if you were wondering why Don Zimmer looks different, Rays third-base coach Tom Foley is wearing his jersey while Zimmer recovers from heart surgery. Now you know.
