Blogdom's Best: Baltimore Orioles
This image was lost some time after publication. More than any other sport, baseball lends itself to individual blog obsession. Whether it's the glut of statistics, the constant opportunities for second-guessing or just the fact that you have something to write about every day, every Major League Baseball team has several blogs obsessed with chronicling the ins-and-outs of everything. Deadspin salutes these modem-addled souls and proudly presents its Great Blog Awards, given to the most outstanding blog for each team. If you would like to nominate a blog (yours even) for selection, just let us know at [email protected]. Today: The Baltimore Orioles.
There was a time, we swear, when it was not the most shocking thing on the planet that the Baltimore Orioles might actually be contenders. It was before the Yankees-Red Sox takeover, back when Cal Ripken was dragging his carcass on the field every day, when Roberto Alomar could swing a bat without falling over, when guys named "Boog" were allowed to play. The Orioles used to be a premier franchise; they used to be expected to win every year. Now, they just deal with steroid rumors, bad mustaches and malcontent guys named "Sidney."
For a team as rich in tradition and wide in fan base as the Orioles are, it's surprising that, comparatively speaking, they are so poorly represented in the blog world. The most popular Orioles site is Birds In The Belfry, but that's more a compedium of resources than an actual blog. The Orioles Magic is an excellent site that's updated daily, though it doesn't answer the question of whether Brian Roberts or not is related to Bip. We think the best Orioles blog is Camden Chat, written by a guy named "SC," who is likely to toss in random Royal Tenenbaums references while discussing Bruce Chen. It's tough to be in good humor when you're an Orioles fan these days, but he's trying.
