Boxing Fans Riot After Local Boy Loses Fight
On Saturday, middleweight Curtis Stevens defeated Carlos Jairo Cruz by stoppage at the end of the fourth round in Cruz’s hometown of Santiago, in the Dominican Republic. Paying fans, who were likely pretty pissed about Stevens’s quick victory, decided that they weren’t ready for the fighting to end just because the referee said so. So they took things—and by things I mean chairs—into their own hands.
Following the bout, a few dozen idiots started a brawl of their own, both in the ring—where they swarmed Stevens and the ref—and around it. Plastic chairs were the most prominent weapon. More worryingly, someone also fired a few gunshots, which you can hear around the 1:20 mark of the video:
Police eventually showed up and dispersed the crowd with tear gas. Reports put the number of injured fans at more than 15.
