Capitals G Logan Thompson signs 6-year, $35.1M extension

The Washington Capitals and goaltender Logan Thompson agreed to a six-year contract extension worth $35.1 million on Monday.
The contract (average annual value of $5.85 million) comes amid Thompson's stellar first season in Washington. The Vegas Golden Knights traded him to Washington last June for a pair of third-round draft picks.
Thompson, 27, has gone 22-2-3 in 27 appearances (26 starts) for the Capitals. He ranks second in the NHL in goals-against average (2.09) and third in save percentage (.925), helping Washington lead the league in scoring defense (2.37 goals allowed per game).
Thompson was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Instead, he will be tied to the Capitals through 2030-31.
"We are pleased to sign Logan to a multi-year contract," Capitals senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick said in a statement. "Logan has demonstrated that he is one of the top goaltenders in the NHL this season and since he joined the League. With his size and exceptional athleticism, we are confident that this signing will enhance one of the most critical positions on our team, especially as he enters the prime years of his career."
In 130 career NHL games between Vegas (2020-24) and Washington, the former undrafted free agent has gone 78-34-14 with a 2.55 GAA and a .915 save percentage.
