Mandatory Credit: Jeff Curry-Imagn Images St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn, playing through a balky right knee this year, went on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday to end his season.
In a corresponding move, the Cardinals recalled right-hander Michael McGreevy from Triple-A Memphis.
Lynn, who has inflammation in the knee, went out a winner on Tuesday night, pitching six innings and allowing four hits, one run and two walks with five strikeouts in a 3-1 home victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The 37-year-old is 7-4 with a 3.84 ERA, 44 walks and 109 strikeouts in 117 1/3 innings over 23 starts. He's also 6-0 in St. Louis this season, 9-0 at home since July 4, 2017, and hasn't lost at Busch Stadium in 21 consecutive starts, according to mlb.com.
"You know, obviously, if this was your last start at Busch Stadium, you don't want to lose -- it was that simple," Lynn said after Tuesday's game. "I had my family here, brothers, dad and everybody here, so I couldn't lose in front of them."
The Cardinals (76-75) had 11 games remaining entering Wednesday and were seven games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets for the last of three National League wild-card berths.
In parts of 13 seasons since 2011, Lynn is 143-99 with one save, a 3.74 ERA, 704 walks and 2,015 strikeouts in 364 games (340 starts). He has pitched for the Cardinals (2011-15, 2017, 2024), Minnesota Twins (2018), New York Yankees (2018), Texas Rangers (2019-20), Chicago White Sox (2021-23) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2023).
"If you ask me if I want to pitch, I never want to stop pitching," Lynn said about playing in 2025. "But I know there's going to be a time when that's going to happen. I haven't really thought about it, but it's part of getting older."
McGreevy, 24, has not pitched for the Cardinals since making his major debut on July 31 against the Rangers in St. Louis. He limited Texas to one run on five hits and one walk while striking out three over seven innings to earn the win.
McGreevy was 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA, 44 walks and 138 strikeouts in 150 innings over 27 starts for Memphis.
The Cardinals selected McGreevy in the first round (18th overall) in the 2021 MLB Draft.
