Cartoonish Misplay Lets Minor-League Hitter Advance To Third Base On Infield Hit
Via [object Object] Randy Arozarena of the Double-A Springfield Cardinals hit what looked like a pretty ordinary infield pop-up in the seventh inning of tonight’s game against the Midland RockHounds. With not one, not two, not three, but four fielders circling the ball, it seemed about as close to an automatic out as you can get. But those four guys just watched as the pop-up dropped amidst them, and Arozarena was not only safe but safe all the way over on third:
First baseman Viosergy Rosa, who dove for the ball and missed, was assigned the error. So officially, the play is one where the runner reached base on an E3 and then advanced to third, rather than the rare infield triple that the broadcaster excitedly declares in the clip above—taken at face value without that technical hang-up, though, it’s sure enough to prove true about the old saying about the triple being the most exciting play in baseball.
