The move saves the Chargers $6.5 million, according to Spotrac.
Kendricks, who turned 32 on Feb. 29, signed a two-year, $13.25 million deal with the Chargers last offseason and had 117 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 15 games (14 starts).
It was the eighth straight season that Kendricks exceeded 100 tackles. He also topped the mark in the final seven seasons of his eight-season tenure with the Minnesota Vikings.
Kendricks was a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection for the Vikings in 2019. He has 1,036 tackles, 18.5 sacks, nine interceptions, six fumble recoveries and five forced fumbles in 132 career games (127 starts).
The Chargers have more big decisions to make as receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams and linebackers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack all have cap hits of more than $30 million.
