Clinton Portis Sues The NFL Over Concussions
There are already numerous lawsuits, joined by thousands of former players, alleging the NFL hid the long-term effects of head injuries and didn't do enough to protect players. Add to them a new suit, filed yesterday in Florida by 83 players including Clinton Portis, Daunte Culpepper, and Carnell "Cadillac" Williams.
Portis, who last played in 2010, has said he suffered double-digit concussions over his career.
Expect this to eventually merge with the other suits from nearly 5,000 former players, which were consolidated earlier this year and are winding their way through the judicial system. Last year, a District Court judge ordered the plaintiffs and the NFL into mediation, a fairly common step. The two sides are to report back to her on Sept. 3, at which time she will rule on the NFL's motion to dismiss the lawsuits.
