It was the second six-point game of McDavid's career.
McDavid now has 603 career assists, reaching the 600-assist mark in the fourth-fewest games in NHL history (616). Only Wayne Gretzky (416 games), Mario Lemieux (514) and Bobby Orr (608) have accomplished the feat quicker.
Evan Bouchard had a goal and two assists and Cody Ceci and Leon Draisaitl each had a goal and an assist for Edmonton, which also saw Zach Hyman, Evander Kane and Dylan Holloway score.
Stuart Skinner made 34 saves for the Oilers, who blew the game open with a five-goal third period.
Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat and David Perron each had a goal and an assist and Joe Veleno also scored for Detroit. Alex Lyon finished with 22 saves after replacing injured starter Ville Husso, who stopped six of seven shots in his first game since Dec. 18.
Husso played just 8:48, leaving the game with a lower-body injury.
Edmonton jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 8:48 mark of the first period when Draisaitl ripped a snap shot for his 25th goal of the season.
Ceci made it 2-0 at 11:05 when he flipped a wrist shot from the right point through traffic for his first goal since Oct. 15, 2022. He went 126 games without a marker, the longest active drought in the NHL.
DeBrincat made it 2-1 near the end of the period with a power-play goal.
Edmonton extended its lead to 3-1 at 10:17 of the second thanks to Bouchard, who netted his 12th goal of the season. Veleno and Patrick Kane scored later in the period to forge a 3-all tie heading into the third.
The Oilers then ran away with the game, as Holloway, Nugent-Hopkins, Hyman and Evander Kane all scored in the first 13:41 of the third to make it 7-3.
Perron and Nugent-Hopkins traded markers to cap the scoring.
