Czech Fans Chant "Monkey, Monkey" At Wayne Simmonds
Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds recently signed with a team in the Czech Republic to try and ride out the lockout. It is exciting for Czech fans to see real life NHLers, but also scary for some of them to see a black person. So a sizable portion of the crowd in Chomutov did not take it well when Simmonds, playing for visiting Liberec, got involved in a fight yesterday. They serenaded him with chants of "opice," Czech for "monkey."
Here's what Simmonds's assistant coach had to say, with an assist from Google translate:
"I'm terribly disappointed that I lived to see such low and primitive things like racist chants and insults for a player's dark skin. Over my short coaching career, it was one of the most embarrassing things."
