Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images Kyle Palmieri scored the decisive goal in the shootout Sunday night for the host New York Islanders, who edged the Seattle Kraken 1-0 in Elmont, N.Y.
It was the first NHL game this season to remain scoreless through regulation and overtime. The 1-0 shootout win was the first for the Islanders since a win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Nov. 24, 2014.
The scoreless tie through 60 minutes was the first in the history of the Kraken, who began play in 2021-22, and the first for the Islanders since Oct. 17, 2024, when they fell to the St. Louis Blues 1-0 in overtime.
Bo Horvat also scored in the shootout for the Islanders, who have won seven of nine. Goalie David Rittich made 19 saves before stopping one shot in the shootout. Freddy Gaudreau opened the shootout with a goal, then a pair of Kraken shot wide before Rittich denied Chandler Stephenson's attempt.
Joey Daccord recorded 34 saves for the Kraken, who finished 2-1-1 on a four-game road trip.
The Islanders outshot the Kraken 20-10 through the first two periods - the first time all season either team was in a 0-0 game through 40 minutes. New York was also held without a goal in the first two periods of Saturday's 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues.
The Islanders had two prime chances to score in the final minute of the second, but Kraken defenseman Jamie Oleksiak hounded Max Shabanov behind the net as Shabanov tried to finish a wraparound before Casey Cizikas' pass into the crease glanced off the skate of Seattle's Adam Larsson.
Rittich stopped a point-blank shot by Berkly Catton with 11:17 left in the third while Jaden Schwartz's shot glanced off his midsection with under two minutes remaining. Daccord stopped solid opportunities by Matthew Schaefer and Mathew Barzal in the final four minutes.
