The Devils snapped a three-game losing streak as Vitek Vanecek made 22 shots.
Patrick Kane scored his fourth goal in three games for the Red Wings, who were playing the second game of a back-to-back. They recorded a 7-6 shootout victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday, in which Kane scored the clinching score during the shootout after tallying twice in regulation.
Shayne Gostisbehere had the other goal for Detroit on Saturday. Michael Hutchinson, making his Red Wings debut, had 32 saves.
Hutchinson was signed earlier in the week as a free agent due to injuries to the team's top two goaltenders, Ville Husso and Alex Lyon.
New Jersey's victory clinched the three-game season series against Detroit, 2-1.
Toffoli scored his 14th goal at 12:45 of the third, tipping in Jesper Bratt's shot from the point. Jack Hughes picked up the second assist.
The Devils had 10 shots on goal in the first period, compared to six by the Red Wings, but it ended with the score knotted at 1.
Kane scored at 4:22 with a one-timer off Alex DeBrincat's feed from the left circle. Moritz Seider had the second assist.
Meier tied it at 11:43 of the period, shoveling in a rebound.
New Jersey killed off the only penalty in the opening period. The Devils had a trio of power play opportunities in the second period and failed to convert, as Hutchinson stopped seven shots in that span.
Gostisbehere ripped a slap shot from the slot past Vanecek midway through the period. Daniel Sprong and Christian Fischer were credited with assists.
A Red Wings turnover in their own zone led to the Devils' tying goal at 2:46 of the third period. Luke Hughes threw the puck toward the net and Meier banged it through Hutchinson's pads.
The teams were a combined 0-for-7 on the power play.
