Diamondbacks capitalize on basepaths, sweep Marlins

Pavin Smith homered, doubled and drove in two runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks swept a three-game series from the host Miami Marlins, prevailing 6-4 on Thursday afternoon.

Arizona has won seven of its past eight games, including five straight.

Josh Naylor, a former Marlins first-round pick, homered for the third straight game.

Arizona stole six bases, including three by Corbin Carroll, who scored twice.

Eduardo Rodriguez (1-2) earned the win, lasting 5 1/3 innings and allowing 10 hits, zero walks and three runs (one earned). He struck out nine batters.

Former Marlins pitcher A.J. Puk pitched a scoreless ninth for Arizona, notching his fourth save of the season, as Miami stranded 15 runners.

Edward Cabrera (0-1) took the loss. He allowed four hits, three walks and five runs in four innings, striking out six.

Rob Brantly, Miami's 35-year-old backup catcher, went 3-for-3 with one RBI. He had two opposite-field singles and a bunt hit.

Marlins third baseman Connor Norby (oblique strain) made his season debut, going 1-for-5, including a bases-loaded strikeout in the seventh.

Arizona scored a hustle run in the first. Carroll struck out on a curveball in the dirt, but he reached on a wild pitch. Carroll then stole second and third before scoring on Geraldo Perdomo's sacrifice fly.

Smith capped the odd first-inning rally with a solo homer.

Miami cut its deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the first as Xavier Edwards singled and scored on Eric Wagaman's double.

Arizona stretched its lead to 3-1 in the third as Perdomo walked and scored on Smith's hit-and-run double down the left field line.

The Diamondbacks made it 5-1 in the fourth. Tim Tawa walked, stole second and scored on Carroll's single. Carroll then stole second and scored on Perdomo's single.

Miami cut its deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Javier Sanoja doubled and scored on Rob Brantly's single.

Naylor homered in the fifth, ambushing the first pitch thrown by reliever Ronny Henriquez.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wagaman reached on third baseman Eugenio Suarez's throwing error. Wagaman came around to score on a wild pitch in the dirt by Rodriguez, making it 6-3.

Miami nearly tied the score in the sixth. With two runners on, pinch hitter Jesus Sanchez belted a slider 390 feet, but his drive was caught on the warning track by center fielder Alek Thomas.

The Marlins loaded the bases against reliever Ryan Thompson with two outs in the seventh. Justin Martinez came in and walked Edwards on a 3-2 count, cutting Miami's deficit to 6-4.

But Martinez struck out Norby, who was caught looking at a 101-mph fastball.
