Did Pat McAfee Kick A 75-Yard Field Goal? (Spoiler Alert: No)
The latest "athlete does something impossible" viral video to make the rounds is Colts punter Pat McAfee nailing consecutive field goals from 65, 70 and 75 yards out. And despite that whole "impossible" thing, there are those who want to believe it's real, citing evidence like "McAfee said it's real" and "there's no obvious tampering with the film." (Transformers 3 also had no obvious tampering with the film, which is kind of the point.)
We get the desire to believe; we've always been more Mulder than Scully. But for those who still haven't made up their minds, here are four reasons it's a fake.
1. The video was made by a kicking/punting camp. The ad's right there on the video. So, you know, warning sign.
2. Why is there a datestamp? When's the last time you saw a video with that? Was this filmed on a camcorder? Is it 1993 and we're watching America's Funniest Home Videos?
3. The ball leaves the screen on every kick. Wouldn't a normal camera person pan up to follow the flight of the ball, since that's the whole point of this video?
4. The most important one: if Pat McAfee could regularly hit field goals from 65, 70 and 75, he wouldn't be a punter. He'd be a kicker, and he'd be the highest-paid kicker ever.
So there you go. Glad we could ruin something else for you, since we hate fun.
